Why "voter apathy" is largely a fictional notion of the government's creation

I hear plenty of talk about "voter apathy" and the fact that we Brits basically aren't interested in turning up to vote and choose who rules over, sorry, I mean "serves" us.

Against the proposed UK biometric ID system - my letter to John Heppell MP

Yesterday, I wrote and posted this letter (clocking in at 3 sides of A4 paper) to John Heppell, who is the MP for Nottingham East where I live.

School music education, or how to castrate a creative subject

It's election day, so naturally instead of talking about the election, I'm going to tell you a music-related story from my childhood. (This follows on from an Ampfea.org Music Bar thread.)

When is a vote not a vote? When it doesn't count for jack, that's when!

As the UK elections draw nearer, there's been a lot of talk about Iraq, education, the NHS, pensions, Rover, you name it! However, one thing that none of the parties seem to be making a big thing of is the fact that a very large percentage of votes don't count for anything at all. What I'm talking about is our electoral system, and the fact that unless you happen to vote for the candidate that wins in your constituency, your vote has absolutely zero effect on the shape of government. That's right - nada, nothing, zilch, zip. You might as well have not bothered voting, because your voice is completely ignored.

Idiotic anti-terror laws and the morons who support them

I'm finding it hard to believe what is going on in this country at the moment, and it's making me rather angry. Charles Clarke and the other dangerous lunatics in government are trying their hardest to erode a fundamental cornerstone of our society - the right to a fair trial, and the guarantee of "innocent until proven guilty".

Internet Explorer 7.0 announced, but it's little comfort to us web developers

So, Microsoft have finally woken up and announced Internet Explorer 7.0, apparently due for beta release on Windows XP this summer. Well "whoopee f-ing doo", because it's not going to heal the wounds caused by it's ancestors just yet.

Mentalfundalist christian bigotry

I recently stumbled upon an article written for the Daily Mountain Eagle (of Jasper, Alabama) by it's copy editor, Susan Sanford. I'm not usually the kind to send lengthy emails to some far-off corner of the world criticising someone else's website, but in this case I felt so incensed by the sheer stupidity of the author, I had to say something. So I wrote a rebuttal email and sent it, and then decided to post it here for your perusal:
