Why "voter apathy" is largely a fictional notion of the government's creation
Posted Thursday 15th December 2005
I hear plenty of talk about "voter apathy" and the fact that we Brits basically aren't interested in turning up to vote and choose who rules over, sorry, I mean "serves" us.
What of those who do not vote on principle, because our democracy is an illusion and a farce?
I am actually not one of those people (although I know our democracy is a farce), but I know plenty of them. They are incredibly political people, desperate to make a change, and lacking in any voting options that will make that change.
Our current voting system and the very narrow political spectrum available to us because of political parties is the cause of the problem.
What we want first is a fair system of voting, where every single vote counts - not the first past the post system which ignores all who don't vote for the winner in their area. It is patently absurd that half our votes are ignored!
Furthermore, political parties absolutely ruin the system, giving us a bunch of drones who will tow the party line over the needs of their constituents every time. I say "no to political parties" and that we need a parliament of independent ministers, not a corrupt and unaccountable party system.
Still, I do vote (for people who don't stand a hope in hell of winning), and approve of living in a democracy.
What I do not approve of is the fact that we can't vote for a fair voting system, and that even if we did get one, we'd still end up voting on a bunch of unelectable career politicians who are only in it for their own gain.
Democracy just about works, but our brand of it is woefully broken. Electoral reform has been required for years, but what sane politician is going to change the system that keeps them in power?
Our system propagates the myth that we have some say in who runs the country, where in reality, it doesn't matter who we vote for - the government always wins.
If it were a practical thing to say, I'm almost of the opinion that nobody who wants to be a politician should be allowed to be one. Good people do not have the desire to be politicians or "rule over" others.
Our politicians have forgotten that they are our servants - they don't respect the needs of the people, and they never will until we throw out this broken system, remove the importance of political parties and stop "parachuting in" candidates to areas that they do not come from or understand. We are absolutely not a democracy until the people control the direction of the country.
A "choice" between a bunch of insufferable smarmy clones is simply an illusion, because they ALL stink without fail! So indeed, I vote with my conscience every time, and it doesn't make a damned bit of difference.
Others similar to myself have given up, and who could blame them? It's not apathy in the slightest, just a supposed "choice" that isn't one, between a bunch of morons who are universally repulsive.
Give us a political system that WORKS, and some independent local people to listen and represent us, and maybe British politics can be saved. At the moment, the "apathy" is a direct result of the broken system, but none of the parties care because it "works" for them and keeps them ruling over us.
When will the British public stop sleep walking and WAKE UP to the fact that we live in a total lie?
