Mentalfundalist christian bigotry
Posted Wednesday 10th March 2004
I recently stumbled upon an article written for the Daily Mountain Eagle (of Jasper, Alabama) by it's copy editor, Susan Sanford. I'm not usually the kind to send lengthy emails to some far-off corner of the world criticising someone else's website, but in this case I felt so incensed by the sheer stupidity of the author, I had to say something. So I wrote a rebuttal email and sent it, and then decided to post it here for your perusal:
Dear Mrs Sanford,
I write regarding your article "Sodom and Gomorrah revisited" - http://www2.mountaineagle.com/22081.html
I expect this to be a total waste of time, but I feel the need to say this to you nonetheless. What you are saying is closed minded bigotry to the point of utter insanity, and you clearly need help to overcome your hatred.
I'm as straight as an arrow and have been happily in love with my girlfriend for a year or so now, but really, what business is it of mine, yours, the government, or anybody else's what consenting adults get up to in the privacy of their own homes between themselves? It's nobody's business in the slightest!! If two people wish to declare their love for oneanother, then good for them! You could learn a lot from such declarations of love!
You christians preach love, yet many (such as you) are so full of hate it's rather saddening to watch you put down anybody and everybody who doesn't agree with you. We are all just humans, and we could all get along a lot better if closed minded idiots such as yourself would take the time to embrace and explore ideas unknown to them, instead of shutting yourself off inside your fear and hatred.
I suppose you oppose the freedom of black people too? Or the right of people of different races to marry each other? What about abortion - I bet that one really ticks you off? It's just that not only are you not a particularly good journalist (the bible is hardly newsworthy - it's been around for some 2000 or so years), you can't even come up with an original thing to say. In fact, the vast majority of your article is simply plagiarised quotes from the bible, used as you see fit to promote your twisted sensationalist agenda.
Your fundamentalist hot-air may sell papers in Alabama, but this is the Internet - the greatest resource for freedom of thought that has ever existed. Guess what? You can spout all the fundamentalist garbage you like, and after a time, people will realise what a hateful, closed minded person you really are, and will simply just ignore you.
Then, when you die, your preposterous ideas will die with you. It's a fact - nobody likes hateful people who try and intimidate others. You and your ilk are a dying breed for a good reason - nobody can stand to listen to the repeated drilling of your preconceived small minded hate mongering! People these days like to think for themselves - and there's nothing you can do to stop them. I bet that really annoys you, doesn't it?
A lot of people in life will do things that annoy you, and you can take one of several paths to deal with it.
Path one: ignore things that have nothing whatsoever to do with you, and just get on with your life.
Path two: use intelligent discussion to persuade others around you to your way of thinking. Fear doesn't cut it any more - these days, you've got to argue your point and prove it. The bible proves nothing, other than that you believe whatever you're told because you're too small minded to come up with your own point of view.
Path three: preach irrelevant verses of hatred from an ancient, unverifiable and factually incorrect text, and condemn anyone who disagrees with you.
Personally, I suspect you are a rather unlikeable homophobic racist redneck - but I'm glad to say that if you ever took it upon yourself to venture outside of your closed little world down there in Alabama, you'd find that a fairly good proportion of the world are free-thinking, balanced minded individuals who do not share your unfounded hatred of any concept alien to them, and would simply accept you for who you are.
I have no shadow of a doubt that you personally would find more acceptance in an average gay bar than you have ever experienced in your church.
So pray for my soul by all means. Without a free mind, my soul is worthless anyway. I pray (figuratively speaking) for the mind of people like you, that one day your eyes will open to see the world around you without hatred.
You are not a christian, you are an angry hater. Think about that fact for a moment.
I'm not a christian either, but I can tell you as a person who has read the bible many times (instead of bashed it to pieces): you have missed the message of Jesus completely. Jesus said to love one another - yet all you do is hate. If he really is your messiah, you would do yourself a service to listen to his teachings.
Personally, I don't need a god to tell me that it's wrong to hate my fellow humans.
Perhaps today is the day for you to open your eyes, go out, and make friends with some gay people. Ignorance breeds hate through fear. Stop living your life in fear of things you don't understand, and instead open your mind to the possibility that (thankfully) not everyone thinks like you. Enjoy and marvel in the diversity of our wonderful Earth, and be thankful you have some time to spend here to make it a better place.
It's not my business to intervene with other people's beliefs, except when I witness such great injustice as you just committed. Your beliefs are personal, and whether you like it or not, it's not your job to enforce them upon other people - that is a violation of everything it means to be an individual.
I'm not about to force you to change your attitude, so I'm just going to say this:
One day, when you are dead, you'll discover (in a round-about way) that you are wrong, and that that you've wasted your life hating people you'd never even met.
So, maybe I'm a sinner and I'll burn in hell for all eternity (as far as you care), but at least I'm able to think for myself, do what I know to be right, and spread a little happiness in those around me, which is more than can be said for you.
Hatred is such a waste of emotional energy. Perhaps you should try pity instead - it's far more productive.
I pity you.
~Dave
